Ex-national player Ludwig “Luggi” Müller died at 79

He played in the Bundesliga for Nuremberg, Mönchengladbach and Hertha BSC and was champion three times. Now the former professional Ludwig Müller died two months before his 80th birthday.

Former national soccer player Ludwig “Luggi” Müller died at the age of 79. His son Martin confirmed this to the German press agency on Friday. The “Main Post” had previously reported on the death of the three-time German champions on Thursday after a serious illness in Haßfurt, Lower Franconia.

In the first few years after the founding of the Bundesliga with the 1. FC Nuremberg (1967) and twice Borussia Monchengladbach (1970, 1971) fetched the bowl. In 1968 and 1969 he played a total of six international matches for the selection of the DFB. In the Bundesliga he was also for Hertha BSC active – the defender played 314 games in the German upper house. There were also nine games with the “Club” and Gladbach in the European Cup.

Uncompromising defender

Born on August 25, 1941 in Haßfurt, Müller grew up as a “street footballer. There was nothing else”, as he once said to the “Franconian Day”. After his youth with his hometown club 1. FC Haßfurt, he went to Nuremberg. After five years at the “Club”, he was in action for three seasons each for Gladbach and Hertha – with the Berliners, Müller, who was feared as an uncompromising defender, was later voted into the team of the century.

After his professional time he returned to Haßfurt, where he was active as a coach or player coach for a long time. He also ran a clothing store with his wife Margot. Müller stayed in contact with former companions like Franz Beckenbauer and Uwe Seeler – among other things through a joint golf group.
