An old acquaintance will be the referee for the Croatia-Spain round of 16. UEFA has appointed the Turkish referee Cüneyt Çakır to lead the momentous meeting of Luis Enrique’s team that will be played on Monday at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen from 6:00 p.m.

This will be the
second time he leads a match between Croatia and Spain after which he refereed in Zagreb in the Nations League. That match was won by the Balkan team 3-2.

In addition to this match against Croatia, Cüneyt Cakir has led the Spanish team 15 more times. The last one ended with a victory in favor of Spain against Georgia (1-2), in the qualifying phase for the World Cup in Qatar.

In the last European Championship, Çakır refereed Spain with bad memories. In the 2016 edition, he was the referee of the round of 16 in which the team was eliminated at the hands of Italy (2-0).

Third match in the Eurocup

The Turkish referee will be accompanied on the wings by his compatriots Bahattin Duran and Tarik Ongun, while the fourth official will be the Swede Andres Ekberg. In the VAR will be the German Bastian Dankert assisted by Christian Dinge, Christian Gittelmann and Pawel Gil.

It will be the third game he leads in the Eurocup, after refereeing Hungary-Portugal (0-3) on the first day and Ukraine-Austria (0-1) on the third.
