A successful pit stop strategy allows Verstapen to overtake Hamilton in the penultimate lap and win

Dutch driver Max Verstapen of the Red Bull team won Sunday in the seventh stage of the Formula One (F-1) World Championship, the French Grand Prix.

Verstapens started the race from the “pole-position”, but already in the second corner he did not control the car and drove a bit off the track, thus his leader Lewis Hamilton from “Mercedes” became the leader.

True, after the first pit stops, Verstapen drove ahead of Hamilton and regained the lead. In the continuation of the race, the Dutchman went into the pits again, but Hamilton continued to drive with the old tires until the finish.

Driving with newer tires, Verstapens overtakes Hamilton in the penultimate lap of lap 52 and was the first to cross the finish line a little later. Third place was won by Verstapena teammate Serhio Peress.

Just behind the podium was Walter Botass (“Mercedes”), but the first six were finished by two McLaren drivers Lendo Norris and Daniel Rikjardo. It was followed by Pierre Gasli (“AlphaTauri”), the eighth was Fernando Alonso (“Alpine”), and the last to score were Sebastian Vettel and Lens Strols (both “Aston Martin”).

After seven stages in the F-1 standings, the leader with 131 points is Verstapen, Hamilton with 12 less, and Peress is the third with 84 points.

In 2020, the seventh F-1 title in his career and the fourth in a row was won by the British Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes. Previously, only the legendary German driver Michael Schumacher managed to win seven times.

Hamilton teammate Botass finished second, while Dutchman Verstapen from the Red Bull team finished third.

The Mercedes team also won the seventh Constructor’s Cup in a row.

It is planned to have a record number of races this season (23).
