17-year-old from PSV Cottbus starts at the U21 Sumo EM

Eight young judoka from the Cottbus Police Sports Club have qualified for the sumo cadet championship for 12 to 18 year olds that will take place next month in Siedlice, Poland. Emily Raak will also be there, but the moment of truth strikes this week. At just 17 years old, the athlete, who is currently completing a social year before her training as a physiotherapist, will start at the U21 European Championship in Kazan.

“Our cadres and perspective cadres were allowed to train during the general corona restrictions on sport. Although always contactless, all of our athletes have worked individually in the areas of strength and endurance. With success, as the nominations show. While the other seven starters still have a few weeks until the European cadet championship, Emily is already competing in the U21 European Championship, ”says Elke Nowack, the long-time judo department head of PSV Cottbus.

Emily Raak has only had her under her wing for two years, but she is enthusiastic about quickly learning the essential techniques of this Asian martial art: “Sumo can be described as a special kind of wrestling match. The aim of every duel is to push the opponent out of a defined circle. Or you try to unbalance your opponent in such a way that he touches the ground with a part of the body other than the soles of his feet. Thus, fights often only last a few seconds if the holds are applied perfectly, ”Elke Nowack explains the secrets of this sport. She herself traveled to Russia with her trainer colleague Jana Hackbarth on Sunday to act as a referee at the U21 European Championship in Kazan.
