160 thousand Tokyo Olympics Condoms for Athletes Souvenirs, Not Direct Use

Jakarta

The distribution of condoms to Olympic athletes is nothing new. But it’s a little different at the Tokyo Olympics because the condoms are not for athletes to use but as souvenirs to take when they return to their respective countries.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which will only start rolling on July 23 due to the pandemic, will take place in a different atmosphere than usual amid the threat of COVID-19.

However, one thing is for sure, the athletes who will appear at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics will still be given free condoms. No less than 160 thousand condoms have been prepared by four Japanese manufacturers.

Judging from its history, free condoms have been distributed since the 1988 Seoul Olympics. This was done as a form of anticipation for potential sexual activity among athletes while in the mess. As well as a form of prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

Regarding the current pandemic situation, the distribution of free condoms to around 15 thousand Olympic and Paralympic athletes is also accompanied by a separate note. The Guardian said that this would render these condoms useless.

This is because sexual activity in the midst of a pandemic situation, even using condoms, is considered not in line with health protocols, specifically physical distancing.

So, even though condoms are still being distributed to athletes, they are warned not to use them during the event. The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee stressed that the use of condoms this time was different from usual.

“Our goal and intention is not for athletes to use the condoms at the Athletes House, but to raise awareness by bringing them back to their respective countries,” the statement said. JapanToday.com.

In other words, the condoms distributed to athletes will not be used but to be taken home as souvenirs. Arriving at the country of origin, then the allocation is further handed over to each athlete.
