Venezia following Empoli and Salernitana promotion to Serie A. I Lagunari ended a 20-year wait to return to play in the highest caste.

The certainty of Venice’s move to Serie A was obtained after they held Cittadella’s 1-1 draw in the second leg of the promotion play-off final, Friday (28/5/2021) early morning WIB. Playing at home, Stadio Pierluigi Penzo, Venezia, fell behind first in the 26th minute due to a goal from Federico Proia.

The situation then became too difficult for the hosts. The reason is, they have to lose two players, namely Pasquale Mazzocchi and Mattia Aramu.

However, a miracle was present for Venice in the final minutes of the match. Riccardo Bocalon scores an equalizer in the 90 + 3 minute.

This draw made Venezia winning 2-1 on aggregate. In the first leg at Cittadella’s home, Paolo Zanetti’s team won 1-0 through a single goal from Francesco Di Mariano.

Venezia managed to seal promotion tickets to Serie A. They returned to the highest caste after 20 years of absence.

The last time Venezia played in Serie A was in the 2001/2002 season. After that, they had to struggle in the lower caste, even having been relegated twice to Serie D in 2009 and 2015. Venezia was also declared bankrupt at the end of the 2004/2005 season.

Venezia followed Empoli and Salernitana, who had already been promoted to Serie A after ranking first and second in Serie B. Venezia’s promotion is clearly a surprise.

This is because in the regular season, they only finished fifth. They have to undergo a play off since the round preliminary round.

In the round preliminary Round, Venezia frustrate Chievo Verona through a 3-2 extension. In the play-off semifinals, Niki Maenpaa et al again performed nicely by beating Lecce 2-1 on aggregate. Until finally in the final, they secured promotion thanks to eliminating Cittadella.
