The Baltimore Ravens have exercised the option of the fifth year of quarterback Lamar Jackson’s contract.

The team announced their decision on Friday, hours before day two of the NFL Draft. Jackson will pocket US $ 23 million under the stepped system of the new collective agreement.

Jackson, the 2019 NFL MVP, tallied 2,757 aerial yards last season, throwing 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a second season from 1,000 rushing yards.

The Ravens are interested in a long-term deal with Jackson and his salary is expected to jump into the millions.

Last year, Deshaun Watson signed a four-season contract extension worth $ 156 million with the Houston Texans. Watson has since asked to be traded.

In 2020, Patrick Mahomes signed his signature to a 10-year pact worth $ 503 million with the Kansas City Chiefs. This agreement is the most lucrative in the history of sports in North America.

In March, Dak Prescott agreed to four years and $ 160 million with the Dallas Cowboys.

These deals will help establish the market for Jackson, who is still playing under the terms of his rookie contract. Jackson, the final first-round pick in the 2018 draft, will not become an unrestricted free agent until 2023.

The Broncos do the same with Chubb

The Denver Broncos exercised the option of linebacker Bradley Chubb’s fifth-year contract on Friday.

Teams have until Monday to exercise the option of the fifth-year rookie contracts of the first-round picks in 2018.

Chubb was selected for the Pro Bowl last season, returning to the game after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament. He had seven and a half sacks and over 60 quarterback tackles.

The fifth overall pick in the 2018 Draft, Chubb signed a four-year contract worth US $ 27.27 million, including nearly $ 18 million in signing bonuses.

He will pocket $ 920,000 in base salary this season in addition to a bonus of $ 3.9 million. His salary will climb to $ 12.72 million next year.

Chubb’s impressive return to the game came as all-star Von Miller was sidelined.

Chubb’s knee, which he injured in Game 4 in 2019, still bothered him during summer camp and even before the start of the season. He did not register any sacks in September.

Miller missed the entire 2020 season with an ankle injury and last month the Broncos used their clause in his 2021 contract.

In 2021, Miller and Chubb hope to play a first full season together since 2918, by which time the duo had managed 26 and a half sacks, including 12 for Chubb, who had set a team record for a rookie in that regard.
