BOLASPORT.COM – New regulatory changes following the withdrawal of North Korea from the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers have worried Malaysia as being second in Group G.

FIFA officially released the decision following North Korea’s withdrawal from the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup qualifiers on Wednesday (26/5/2021).

Following are the decision points as reported by BolaSport.com from the official FIFA website:

  • North Korean points that have been earned will be forfeited. Group H will consist of 4 teams and all the points that the other teams got against North Korea do not count.
  • All matches between runner-up and rank five (caretaker) AH group are not counted for points.
  • Determination of the best runner-up will be determined through 5 criteria, namely points, goal difference, number of goals entered, fair-play, and drawing.

From the 3 points above, it can be understood that the method of qualifying for qualification remains the same, namely that there will be 8 group leaders and 4 best runners-up who will qualify directly for the third round of the 2022 World Nutmeg Qualification round.

However, there are slight changes in determining the best runner-up.

The results of the match between the runners-up and the bottom team of each group will not be counted, because group H is only followed by 4 teams at this time.

In Group G, this decision will certainly have an impact on the final standings later.

If Indonesia later becomes the caretaker of the group (because they are currently in that position with 0 points after 5 matches), then whoever is the group runner-up has the right to be concerned because the result of the match against Indonesia will not be counted.
