Ice Hockey? Never heard of (daily newspaper Junge Welt)

Has anyone noticed? Promotion duel between the Kassel Huskies and the Bietigheim Steelers (May 18, 2021)

On Wednesday, national football coach Joachim Löw presented his EM team in front of TV cameras for half a day. Does anyone know the German cracks who will play at the Ice Hockey World Championships in Latvia and Belarus from this Friday? The promotion race in the 2nd Bundesliga has been present on all channels for weeks, the finish line the day after tomorrow. Does anyone know that a newcomer to the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) will be determined these days after 15 years? The Kassel Huskies led after three games in the best-of-five final series of the DEL 2 against the Bietigheim Steelers with two wins. The second division champions can submit their license documents for the elite league by Monday.

This promotion race is just as rare on television as the recent showdown for the 100th German ice hockey championship. Two weeks ago there was no freely accessible broadcast of the all-important DEL final between the Berlin polar bears and the grizzlies from Wolfsburg two weeks ago – what a shame! Not even at Sport 1Where the “world is a disc” and puck sport is a fixture in the program, the decisive 2-1 victory for the Berliners could be seen. For friends of the world’s fastest team sport, there was a cut shortly before midnight. Nothing was to be expected from the public-law side anyway, ice hockey has been an unknown being there for years. The RBB left the anniversary finale cold like all the other »third parties« included Onethat is sometimes good for sports.

Who cares about a 100th championship on the puck? Methodical ignorance even on the most important news broadcast. The »Tagesschau« on Saturday at 8 p.m. naturally ignored the crucial decision that had been made the day before on Berlin’s ice. Nothing about it in the first morning magazine after the polar bear coup either. After all, hockey. But ice hockey? Never heard. What additional media attention did the sensational silver at the 2018 Olympics bring to the skating sport? Nothing. Probably because, for TV makers, a football fits much better between two ears and on one shoulder than a small hard rubber disk.
