The Polypus Volant d’Or tournament took place last Saturday at Bernard-Gariépy high school. Each athlete who finished on the podium in his category received his pass for the regional championship to be held on April 1 at Durocher St-Lambert College.

The Polypus managed a gold double among the youngsters, with Alexis Hogue in the men’s singles and Marianne Lesieur in the women’s singles. Alexis Hogue achieved the feat by winning all his meetings. For her part, Marianne Lesieur showed character when she let slip the first duel.

“This feat is truly exceptional given that the Polypus, with its 14 athletes, are among the smallest teams in the league,” coach Daniel Valois said in a statement. They face several schools represented by 30-35 athletes who play in badminton sport-study programs. “

Sarah Goulet finished with a 4th position in singles in the junior category. Zavier St-Onge reached the playoff round, losing in the game for third place. The winners left with a gold wheel given to the champions during each edition.

Former Polypus color-bearers, including the three-time provincial medalist Kim Lavallée, as well as several members of the faculty came to encourage the athletes of Bernard-Gariépy and Fernand-Lefebvre for the occasion. According to Daniel Valois, this is a sign that Sorel badminton is doing better and better and that it is of interest to more amateurs.

The next Polypus competition will be the double and mixed qualification which will be held at Notre-Dame de Lourdes high school in St-Lambert on Saturday March 18th.
