Hermanos González win the National Golf Couples Championship

The brothers Diego and Eduardo González, from the San Luis Country Club, put their experience in collegiate golf in the USA to good use and won the XXVII National Couples Championship, with a score of -13. This tournament was held at the Queretaro Country Club, from May 13 to 16.

After three competitive rounds in which they finished below par, the pair finished with a six-shot advantage against second place occupied by Roberto Terrazas and Santiago San Román (-7), from Bosque Real Country Club; as well as the third place in which Gonzalo Gallegos and Luis Gerardo Cantú (-7), from Las Misiones Country Club were left. It is worth mentioning that there was a tiebreaker by card.

“We came today to do what we had to do, with a good cushion from the first round, that relaxed us a bit for the second, we loosened up a bit but we did well,” said Diego, at the end of the final round.

In this tournament -sponsored by Unifin, Conade, Furí Restaurant, Querétaro Secretariat of Tourism, Querétaro Government, Central Central Restaurant, Adidas, AVIS, TaylorMade and Querétaro Country Club- the good golf level that the González brothers have acquired was shown in US college golf.

On the one hand, Diego – who turns 22 tomorrow – is two semesters away from graduating in North Carolina; Meanwhile, Eduardo – 23 years old – graduated from the University of Texas and has a little more experience, so he commented on his perception of Mexican golf before the American.

“Here in Mexico it is going very well, the children’s-youth tournaments are growing more and more; but there the support in the universities is very good and that is what raises a lot ”, he explained and spoke about his processes to reach the National Collegiate Athletic Association:

“We both played from a very young age on national tours. The Federation supported us to play international tournaments, that helped us a lot to be seen by coaches from different universities ”, said Eduardo González.

It should be noted that both Eduardo and Diego González – who are from the “Championship” category -, as the first place of the “AA”, Federico Parás (Club Campestre de Monterrey) and Óscar Gámez (Club de Golf la Herradura), with this achievement, they obtained their place in the XCII Mexico International Amateur and in a tournament in Colombia, to be defined.

On the other hand, the category “A” winners were Francisco Villanueva and Rolando Garay, from the Vallescondido Golf Club; while “B” were the brothers Alejandro and Adolfo Blasquez.

What follows for the winners of the honor category, “Championship”, is: Eduardo will travel to the UK this Monday to compete in the 2021 St Andrews Links Trophy tournament, which will be played from June 4-6; while, Diego will continue preparing to close in the best places in American collegiate golf.
