Could Jacob deGrom beat Bob Gibson’s 1.12 ERA?

The ace of the New York Mets, Jacob deGrom, enters his Sunday Night Baseball opening (7 pm ET on ESPN) against the Atlanta Braves with a miniscule 0.80 ERA. Simply saying he’s the best in MLB so far this season doesn’t do him justice.

No qualified starting pitcher in modern history has posted an ERA below 1.00 in a full season. Yes, we only made it to Memorial Day weekend, but not only is it the Year of the Pitcher, but deGrom is a legitimate challenger – a two-time Cy Young winner and arguably the best pitcher in the game. If he can stay healthy, which, to be fair, has been a problem for him in 2021, who says he can’t break Bob Gibson’s 1.12 ERA record set more than 50 years ago?
