Already the setting of this game for all or nothing was somehow typical 1. FC Köln. Relegation second leg on Saturday, sometime between the “final day of the amateurs” and the final of the Champions League. So exactly where so many Cologne residents see each other. Cheering up today, sad to death tomorrow – that has accompanied this club for many decades and this season too.

This is how it deserves to stay in the relegation class, so much will 1. FC Köln soon need a different way of thinking, a greater cooperation, in order to possibly compensate for deficits in the future with atmosphere. Clubs like Augsburg, Mainz, Union, Frankfurt, Freiburg or Bielefeld sprint away from FC by compromising on strategic partners and on the stadium. All of this should be prevented in Cologne. It will be seen where this policy leads.

It won’t be easy for Baumgart

The new attempt with Steffen Baumgart as trainer will not be easy. Also because Cologne is not getting any easier. From tomorrow there will be discussions about Horst Heldt, the sports director who will soon be blamed for the biblical original sin in Cologne. The ability to address and fix errors together has been lost at some point in the past few years. Instead: schemers determine the scenery and mood. Responsibility is passed on as soon as things go wrong. If this doesn’t change soon, FC will have to tremble in the coming season as well.
