The badminton national team raised suspicion of corruption

Press conference at the National Assembly following the Blue House National Petition

Chung Kyung-eun, who raised the suspicion of unfair selection for the badminton national team, filed a petition for the Blue House and then held a press conference at the National Assembly to appeal for resentment.

On the 5th, Jung Kyung-eun attended a press conference hosted by a Democratic Party member along with Jeon Yong-gi at the National Assembly Communication Hall, arguing that the selection for the badminton national team held in January was not fair.

Jeong Kyung-eun, who won the bronze medal in women’s doubles badminton at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, competed in the national team qualifier last month, which ran 10th in the world ranking, but failed to maintain the Taegeuk mark.

The selection is based on the score of the match result (win rate) 50% and the evaluation score 50%, and Jung Kyung-eun raised the suspicion of “scoring boost”, saying that it was possible to manipulate it because the subjective evaluation of the judges played a large role.

Jeong Gyeong-eun pointed out that there were players with a Taegeuk mark because they received high scores in the judges’ evaluation even though their win rate was lower than that of herself.

Rep. Jeon Jeon said, “According to the selection screening data, the five finalized players scored close to a perfect score of 50, but the remaining players received a uniform score of less than 21 points.” “I said.

In response, the Korea Badminton Association explained that “The Performance Improvement Committee also saw that the evaluation score was wide, so we received additional opinions from the judges and went through the process of deliberation once more.”

In the past, he added, “In the past, the national team was selected with 100% of the judges’ evaluation score, but the proportion of the national team was gradually reduced to 50% of the current evaluation score,” he added, adding that the selection method is continuously improving.

In the Yonhap News call, Jung Kyung-eun said, “There are some unfortunate parts and there seems to be a problem with the system, so I raised the problem.”

He added, “I think the wrong people should take responsibility and change the system to a better system for players.”

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Sports Ethics Center, and the Korean Sports Association are investigating the truth about the allegations raised by Kyung-eun Jeong.

Kim Taek-gyu, chairman of the Korea Badminton Association, officially inaugurated on the 4th, announced that he would improve the selection method for national representatives.
