Ski jumping:Willinger Wind

Wind is nothing special in Willingen. In January, an uncomfortable breeze sweeps over the tops of the Upland in northern Hesse. It doesn’t always sweep record breaking, but on Sunday it made for an incredibly long first run. It took more than two hours until the last ski jumper was down, which is why the second round was canceled.

The jumpers were happy to finally get into the warmth, and especially happy were those who also took a podium place here, including Markus Eisenbichler in third place. The most consistent jumper in the German team is sometimes the victim of his own anger about the circumstances – when jumping on Saturday, for example, he complained about eighth place. This time, on Sunday, as the penultimate jumper, he kept calm and balance. He threw himself out into the crosswind, caught an air cushion and landed at 143 meters – further than everyone else in front of him, but the Pole Piotr Zyla stayed ahead of him due to poor winds. The winner was Halvor Egner Granerud, the World Cup leader from Norway, who once again couldn’t get anything out of his perfection: 149 meters!

For part of the DSV team around coach Stefan Horngacher, the wind was gracious, Pius Paschke (8th) and Severin Freund (17th) and Karl Geiger (23rd) still secured World Cup points, the chances of the others were blown away. Saturday was also disappointing. Everyone is now going to the World Cup in Klingenthal in Vogtland, where there is also a large hill, with a little less wind.
