Slovak cycling star Peter Sagan, his brother Juraj and compatriot Erik Baska have tested positive for coronavirus, his team, the Bora-Hansgrohe, announced on Saturday. “The three runners show slight symptoms of the disease” and were quarantined on the island of Gran Canaria, where the German formation is holding a concentration, said the medical director Christopher Edler.

The impact of these three positive tests on Sagan’s start to the season “is currently unknown,” explained Bora-Hansgrohe director Ralph Denk. The triple world champion had a less successful 2020 season than usual, in which he failed to add an eighth green jersey to his collection at the Tour de France.

But the winner of the Tour of Flanders (2016) and the Paris-Roubaix (2018) should in principle be recovered for the first races of a day of the season, the Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne circuits. The two Belgian tests are scheduled for February 27 and 28.
