Match report | Kiel – Darmstadt

Bayern-Schreck Holstein Kiel continued its triumphant advance in the DFB Cup and reached the quarter-finals for the third time.

A good three weeks after their second-round coup against triple winners Bayern Munich, the North Germans also won the second division duel of the last sixteen with Darmstadt 98 and their ex-coach Markus Anfang again on penalties 7: 6. After 120 minutes, the match was 1: 1 (1: 1, 0: 0).

Kiel was most recently in the top eight in the cup competition in 2012. Darmstadt, on the other hand, has to wait for his first quarter-final participation since 1987.

Lorenz ensures decisive hits

Simon Lorenz scored the decisive goal for the hosts in the ninth penalty run after Darmstadt’s third miss by Tim Skarke. After Kiel’s first lead by Janni-Luca Serra (58th), Serdar Dursun forced extra time for the lilies four minutes before the end of regular time.

In view of the importance of the second duel within ten days, safety was the trump card on both sides. Most of the action took place in midfield, especially since the defensive lines of both teams were stable and did not reveal any serious gaps. Correspondingly, scoring chances were in short supply.

Open exchange of blows

After the leadership of the hosts, who had won the game against the lilies 2-0 on the weekend before last in Darmstadt, the encounter increasingly developed into a more open exchange of blows. In order to prevent the knockout, the guests inevitably pushed more and more for the equalization, while Kiel wanted to bring about the decision via relief attacks. However, the storks’ efforts were mostly too harmless to endanger Darmstadt’s gate. When Dursun equalized, Holstein goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios, who was one of Kiel’s match winners against Munich, did not cut a good figure.

The extra time was marked by the wear and tear of both teams. The rare opportunities after a lack of concentration in the defensive were not compelling enough on the Kiel and Darmstadt sides.
