Basketball: The Blues will know

This Tuesday morning, FIBA will draw lots for the group composition for the first round of 5×5 basketball at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The two French teams will thus know their opponents.

The Blues, like the Blues, will know. This Tuesday morning, from 10:30 a.m., French time, FIBA will, in fact, at the Maison du basket-ball in Mies (Switzerland), draw lots for the first round of the Olympic basketball tournament of the Games of Tokyo 2020, scheduled from July 25 to August 8, 2021. The French 5 × 5 basketball teams, women and men, will thus know their opponents. As a reminder, a new formula has been put in place for the first round. Now there will be three pools of four teams, instead of two pools of six teams. The goal ? Reduce the number of matches during this first round and limit potential “calculations” in view of oppositions in the quarter-finals. Note that at the end of this round, the first two of each group as well as the two best thirds will be qualified. A new draw will then take place.

What opponents for France?

For the moment, there are still four entry tickets for men. They will go to the winners of the four Olympic qualifying tournaments, held in Canada, Croatia, Lithuania and Serbia. Thus, still for men, the teams already qualified are France, therefore, Japan, the United States, Spain, Argentina, Iran, Nigeria and Australia. If FIBA have announced that France could not fall against Spain, the Blues still risk facing the United States or Australia. The Tricolores will not face Argentina, however, nor the selection that will win the TQO of Belgrade (Serbia) insofar as the parties concerned will find themselves in the same hat.

On the women’s side, all the participating teams are known. These are France, Spain, United States, Japan, Australia, Serbia, Belgium, Canada, Puerto Rico, China, Nigeria and South Korea. Placed in the same hat as Belgium and Canada, the Bleues will not face the two teams in question, at least not in the first round. As for the men, they will not fall on Spain either, since it is not possible that the hens of the first round bring together more than two selections from the same continent.
