Tryout as a training player at the BG Göttingen worked

Mathis Mönninghoff feels like a Göttinger – and was very happy that the BG Göttingen Signed again in early October. In the meantime, the 28-year-old has found his role in the Bundesliga basketball team and reports that he has worked well with head coach Roel Moors. How good the team spirit is, he and his teammates have to play against at 7 p.m. on Friday in the early home game Rasta Vechta to prove.

After the final tournament in Munich the contract ran between Mönninghoff and the violets at the end of June 2020. It didn’t look like an extension at first, especially with the move from Johan Roijakkers to direction Bamberg a lot had to be reorganized at BG. “I kept my eyes and ears open for other options, but luckily I was able to train with the BG and had an internal tryout under Roel Moors,” reports the forward.

He and his wife Catharina were with their two-year-old son Leno from the apartment provided by the club in the summer Geismar Pulled out the country road. For the small family, however, it was clear that they would be in Göttingen wanted to stay. “We feel at home here, my wife has started studying. Of course we also know that you have to be flexible in professional sport, ”says Mönninghoff. They found an apartment in the not far away KiesseeKarree. “There are many playgrounds here and we can be outside in the countryside with the dog in no time.” Leno goes to an ASC kindergarten. “Somehow the plan worked out,” said the basketball player happily about the good framework conditions in Göttingen. Back in 2018, when he was in Tübingenthat ended with the descent, back to Southern Lower Saxony came, you could tell how much Göttingen is the athlete’s comfort zone. Even the Goldendoodle “Cookie”, who is a real Göttinger, feels at home here.

“I now enjoy basketball again, I lost it a bit last season. I now feel good on the field again, ”said Mönninghoffwho recently had little play under Roijakkers. “In the past few months I have gained a lot of self-confidence and am satisfied with my role. The team is very nice, now there are only a few wins left. ”He doesn’t attach too much importance to the fact that he was regularly counted in the starting five before his ligament injury, which he sustained in training. That is a positive side effect. What is important is what you show during the game – regardless of whether you are on the field from the start or are substituted on. “But of course I am happy about the trust the coach has if he sets me up from the start.”

Distance throws have always been his specialty. The cup game against Vechta with six transformed threesomes was a knot loosener. “Since then I have even more confidence in my litter and a lot of fun when I’m on the field.” Playing in the hall without spectators is “funny”, but he has got used to it by now. “With the final tournament in Munich, the test games, the cup and the Bundesliga games I’ve played more than 20 games without a spectator. Unfortunately, you get used to this state of affairs. ”It is lonely, however, when you come into the hall two hours before the game, it is empty and does not fill up during the warm-up and throwing in.

The fan review after the game in Frankfurt he could understand, but emphasized: “We are working hard to get out of this hole. The win in Giessen has done well, the third quarter in Frankfurt was then unfortunately not good to look at. The game against Vechta will be one of the most important this season. We absolutely have to find our self-confidence again, ”says Mönninghoff.

That team building is going a little differently this season than in the past is that Corona-Pandemie owed. “Such activities as going out to eat together are of course eliminated. But we still hang around a lot in the dressing room after training, listening to music and chatting. Some guys play too Video games together, ”says the basketball player.

Roel Moors is the fifth coach that the 28-year-old has become a professional in the Basketball Bundesliga Has. “He has an incredibly positive manner,” he praises the Belgian. “I can talk to him openly about everything, he always listens and hangs in. I have a good connection to him, I find it very confident and compatible. “
