The city continues to promote sporting activity with a new injection of aid for sporting events of municipal interest. The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through the Municipal Sports Institute (IMD), continues to promote sport in the capital and the promotion of the image of the city through sports activity by distributing 308,514.18 euros in subsidies for sporting events of municipal interest. This amount will increase in the corresponding calls scheduled for this 2021, as reported by the City Council through a statement.

The head of the IMD, Sports Councilor Aridany Romero, highlighted the “capital importance that the municipal government is giving to promoting physical activity and sports. Proof of this is that this year we contemplate the highest budgets in the history of the city in this area, with the most comprehensive chapter on subsidies available to the Institute so far ”.

“Despite the health crisis,” he stressed, “from the IMD we have been able to organize more than twenty sporting events with all the guarantees.” “We have put ourselves at the service of clubs and promoters so that the city could continue with physical activity and competitions at a time when this sector has also been affected,” he added. So much so that, in the words of Romero, “we were one of the first municipalities to have a contagion prevention plan for events. In addition, a large number of sports disciplines have been able to continue thanks to the financial support provided by the IMD now that private sponsorships have decreased due to the economic crisis ”. The municipal body has proceeded to the corresponding payment of a total of 22 sporting events, among which the 44th edition of the Canary Islands Rally (60,000 euros), the international Transgrancanaria race (30,000), the San Silvestre LPGC (30,000), the ITF stand out. World Tennis Tour DISA (15,000) or the LPA Surf City (15,000).

Likewise, solidarity, traditional and popular events have been included such as the Latin Sailing Regatta of the Foundational Festivities (12,000), the Rainbow Family Fun Run of the Small Valiente Association (10,000), the Solidarity Judo Stage (6,000) or the Lucha del Garrote event at the Foundation Festivities (3,000), among others.

He stressed that “for this progressive government it is vital to continue promoting healthy habits in all age groups of the population, hence the subsidized events have taken into account minors, people with disabilities, adults and even the elderly. There has also been room for solidarity actions around the events, as can be seen in the nature of several of the events held in the capital ”. “We are going to continue in 2021, despite the health crisis, holding sporting events in this new normal in which, at least in the first months of the year, we will see between 3,000 and 4,000 participants running at the same time through the city, with the implementation of formulas that give certainty to the promoters and participants will be able to continue celebrating most of them “, he said.
