Red Sox among others, are signed by Marcus Semien

According to a report by Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Phillies, Reds, Red Sox and Athletics have been involved in negotiations with Marcus Semien, who spent the past six seasons with Oakland.

Presumably the Phillies, Reds and Athletics are targeting the 30-year-old shortstop, but the Red Sox have Xander Bogaerts of Curaçao at the position and would be considering Semien for middleweight.

Semien did not play a single inning at a position other than shortstop during his time with the Athletics, but he defended third base and second base in the two years he was with the White Sox before coming to Oakland.

Semien struggled in the 2020 regular season, hitting .223 / .305 / .374 with seven home runs, but bounced back in the playoffs, going 11-for-27 (.407) with two home runs and a 1.151 OPS. He finished third in the AL MVP voting the previous year, producing 8.9 wins over replacement (according to Baseball-Reference).
