Records in Super Bowl History • First and Ten

A few days before the Super Bowl LV is played and hoping that it will be a game in which history is rewritten, we present the records in the history of the Super Bowl.

Records by team

We have a couple of franchises, the Steelers and Patriots, who have won the most titles in the Super Bowl era, but Tom Brady could surpass them if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win this year’s edition.

There are other points records that will be in the sights as the game unfolds.

  • Most points in a game: San Francisco 49ers with 55
  • Biggest comeback: Patriots vs Falcons, trailing 28-3, winning 34-28
  • Most points in a game between both teams: 75 points (49ers 49-26 Chargers)
  • Most TDs in a game: 49ers vs Broncos with 8
  • Longest TD series: 96 yards (three times)
  • Longest series: New York Giants with 9 minutes and 59 seconds

Records per offensive player

Tom Brady is the top winner of Super Bowl MVP nominations with four. With the triumph of Super Bowl LIII, the Buccaneers QB is the player with the most champion titles in NFL history, in addition to having the records for the most Super Bowl games played (he is going for the 10th), the most times as a starter, more QB wins and of course, the oldest QB to win this game (beating Peyton Manning at 39 years and 320 days).

Here are other records to consider for Super Bowl LV

  • Most lifetime points scored: Jerry Rice, 48 points
  • Most completions in a game: Tom Brady at 43
  • Most lifetime passes completed in Super Bowl: Tom Brady with 256
  • Longest Pass: 85-yard Jake Delhomme
  • Most TD passes in a game: Steve Young with 6
  • Most rushing yards in one game: Timmy Smith with 204 yards
  • Longest haul in history: Willie Parker 75 yards
  • Most catches in one game: James White with 14 passes caught
  • Most yards per pass in a game: Jerry Rice 215 yards
  • Longest catch: Muhsin Muhammad 85 yards
  • Most TD passes caught in one game: Jerry Rice with 3 passes

Records per defensive player

This edition of Super Bowl we will see a couple of good offensive coordinators who know how to create game plans that can nullify any offense and I would not be surprised if they both try to have one of their players add their name to some of the following records.

  • Most sacks in one game: LC Greenwood at 4.0
  • Most interceptions in one game: Rod Martin with 3
  • Most yards after an interception: Pittsburgh Steelers’ James Harrison vs Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII
  • Most tackles combined: Dan Morgan with 18 (11 solo and 7 assists)

Records per game

Super Bowl LV will have several records to break. From the outset, we forget the best attendance with 103 thousand 985 people in the XIV edition, but that of the audience will be attractive to see, since the record for now belongs to Super Bowl XLIX between the Seahawks and the Patriots that brought together 114.5 millions of viewers watching television.

Records that have never happened

As strange as it may seem, here is a compilation of things that have never happened in the Super Bowl, so if it happens, we will be facing a historical event.

  • It has never snowed
  • A punt has never been returned to TD
  • There has never been a whiteout
  • There has never been a Super Bowl without touchdowns

Records we could see in Super Bowl LV

Oldest Head Coach to Win a Super Bowl

Right now Bill Belichick is the owner of this brand by winning Super Bowl LIII at the age of 66. If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers do win Super Bowl LV, Bruce Arians would become the oldest Head Coach to win the Vince Lombardi trophy. The Bucs coach is 68 years old.

The first quarterback to win a Super Bowl in three different decades

Right now the Manning brothers (Eli and Peyton) in addition to Tom Brady are the only quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl in two decades but no one has in three. In fact, no one had ever played a Super Bowl in three different decades except Tom Brady. Well, Brady himself will have a chance to win it and become the first QB to win at least one Super Bowl in three decades if his team beats the Chiefs.

Andy Reid could join a select and historic group of head coaches

If the Kansas City Chiefs win the next Super Bowl, Andy Reid could join Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Chick Noll, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Shanahan and Bill Belichick as the only coaches to win the Super Bowl in consecutive years.

But Mahomes could also add his name to another list

If Mahomes returns to a performance like the one that most expect in the Super Bowl, he could be named the MVP again and this would join a select list of players who have been named the most valuable player in the Super Bowl multiple times. This list is made up of Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Eli Manning and Tom Brady although only Starr and Bradshaw received the nomination in consecutive years.

Patrick Mahomes could become the youngest QB with two Super Bowl rings

That’s right, Patrick Lavon Mahomes II to win could be the youngest quarterback in Super Bowl history with two rings. The quarterback who has this mark will have it as a rival on Sunday, February 7, because Brady won his second NFL title at age 26 in Super Bowl XXXVIII against the Carolina Panthers. Mahomes will be 25 years and 143 days old on the day version 55 of the Super Bowl is played.

The Chiefs have another historic opportunity

If they win Super Bowl LV, they could be one of the teams to have won titles in consecutive years and the first to do so since the Patriots in 2003-2004. The franchises that have achieved this are the 1966-67 Packers, the 1972-73 Dolphins, the 1974-75 and 1978-79 Steelers, the 1988-89 49ers, the 1992-93 Cowboys, the 1997-98 Broncos. and the Patriots that I already mentioned. Should they lose, they would join the 1977 Cowboys, 1983 Washington, 1997 Packers, 2014 Seahawks and 2017 Patriots as the teams that failed to win the Super Bowl in consecutive years.

Tom “Wild Card” Brady

If the Buccaneers win Super Bowl LV he could join Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Mannig and Aaron Rodgers as the only quarterbacks to win a title playing every playoff on the road. And he could also join Peyton Manning as the only QBs to win a Super Bowl with different franchises.

The record between the AFC and NFC is tied in the Super Bowls, but …

For those who do not know, the American Conference went through dark times in the Super Bowl because from 1984 to 1996 its representatives could not win a title. Things changed in the wake of the Broncos’ victories in 1997 and 1998, and teams like the Patriots, Ravens and Steelers have won multiple times since then. Since 2000 the AFC has a 13-6 record. Today the record is 27 victories for the AFC and 27 victories for the NFC for what will be broken in Super Bowl LV.

The brands Tom Brady could make more unreachable

  • Will play his 10th Super Bowl
  • If he wins, he would have seven Super Bowl rings (the next one has five)
  • Most passes thrown and completions in a Super Bowl. It has 392 launched and 256 completed.
  • 2,838 yards has thrown in a Super Bowl
  • 18 touchdown passes in Super Bowl
