The Lions announced the deal with the former New Orleans Saints tight end instructor on Wednesday, the day after Brad Holmes was announced to be the organization’s chief executive.
Campbell, who also served as an assistant coach with the Saints, has 11 seasons of coaching experience and 11 more as an NFL player. He went 5-7 as interim head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2015.
Campbell, who is from Clifton, Texas, shone as a tight end for Texas A&M University and was selected in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He caught 91 passes for 934 yards and 11 touchdowns with the Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Lions and Saints.
The Lions ended the final season with a 5-11 record – they’ve hit the 10-game losing streak in 13 seasons since 2000 – and have recorded just one playoff win since winning the Super Bowl in 1957.
