A year after his tragic death at the age of 41, one of the legends of the NBA, five-time champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, continues to inspire memories. He is the most quoted sportsman in the “lyrics” (lyrics) of rap heavyweights such as Lil Wayne (Kobe Bryant) or Kendrick Lamar (The Heart Pt. 2), but not only: his name appears in 1,147 songs. A record for eternal posterity.

The six-time Ballon d’Or Lionel Messi ranks second with 553 occurrences. Justin Bieber plays with his name like a ball in his title Holy (over 112 million views on YouTube). Michael Jordan is mentioned 439 times by various artists. That’s almost three times less than Kobe Bryant, but legend MJ inspires big hitmakers like Jay-Z (Again) or Drake (Over My Dead Body).

The “football, basketball, boxing” combo, a sure bet

The only names of heavyweights Mike Tyson (4th, 407 titles) and Muhammad Ali (8th, 236 titles) are an imposed figure of the prosodic grammar of rap. The world of boxing inspires (3rd sport with 729 occurrences), behind basketball (2nd, 2,123) and football (1st, 2,738). The name of Diego Maradona, immortalized by Manu Chao (The Tombola Life), appears in only 270 songs. It is less than Cristiano Ronaldo (5th, 280), but one length ahead of George Best (7th, 269).

Ronda Rousey, the first wife

Bronze medalist in judo at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, star in MMA then in wrestling, Californian Ronda Rousey is the first woman in the ranking (43rd, 31 titles). Rapper Eminem devoted some salacious rhymes to him in Shady XV. Rousey is ahead of her compatriot Serena Williams (49th, 24 titles), but this one arrives well before the first tennis player (Fred Perry, 44th, 29 titles).

Zinédine Zidane, the first French

In 2006, “Zizou” (11th, 216 songs) had inspired Zidane is going to score by host Cauet, on a remix by Martin Solveig and Salif Keïta.
