The Williams Formula 1 team has announced the hiring of former British driver Jenson Button, 2009 world champion, as an advisor, 21 years after making him debut in a premier class motorsport grand prix.

The team explained in an official statement that Button, 41, who won his F1 title with the Brawn GP team, will serve as “senior advisor” and will have a multi-year contract.

“I am very happy to be able to say once again that I have signed for Williams”, announced Button. “When I was 19 it was a moment that changed my life and, even though it was more than 20 years ago, I feel like I never left,” he added.

“Sir Frank Williams showed faith in me for which I will be forever grateful and I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to come back and help the team in their fight for success once again,” he explained.

Williams, who changed ownership last year with the founding family selling to US-based Dorilton Capital, said Button will attend several races with them and some team events in Britain.

The Briton, who retired in 2017 after eight years at McLaren, will combine this new job with his role as an expert in broadcast television. Sky Sports.

“Re-incorporating Jenson is another positive step in helping us move forward as a team, both on and off the track,” said newly appointed Williams CEO Jost Capito. He said Button’s experience “will add another layer to our transformation both technical and commercial.”

Williams’ car drivers for 2021 are young Briton George Russell, who has a long-term contract with Mercedes and shone as a replacement for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton last season, and Canadian Nicholas Latifi. The team finished last without a point last year and haven’t won a race since 2012.
