Ice hockey – botched anniversary – sport

It should have been Don Jackson’s evening. For the 900th time, the EHC Red Bull Munich coach stood behind the boards at a game of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) on Tuesday. But the Augsburg Panthers thwarted the record coach of the DEL. Despite a 2-1 lead, Munich had to admit defeat 5: 6 (2: 1, 1: 5, 2: 0) in the derby. The 21-year-old Augsburg striker Samir Kharboutli and – from Munich’s point of view – a horror middle third stole the show from Jackson: The EHC conceded five goals in the second 20 minutes, four of which were prepared by Kharboutli. It was his first four DEL scorer points ever.

Philip Gogulla had to deal with one of the strongest Augsburgers in minute three: Markus Keller in the Panther’s goal blocked his shot from close range. When Keller showed a top parade after a cross pass to the ex-Augsburg Trevor Parkes (7th), the EHC was already behind because Adam Payerl had used a rebound from Munich goalkeeper Daniel Fießinger (5th). The EHC pressure was rewarded in nine minute when Gogulla overcame Keller for the first time. Four minutes later, Munich, with defender Konrad Abeltshauser celebrating his comeback after a four-week injury break, had turned the game – but with a very debatable goal: Maximilian Daubner skated the target over the goal line. The referees went to the video evidence – and confirmed the goal.

A third later, Daubner’s goal was no longer an issue, as Munich conceded four goals within four and a half minutes. Dennis Miller (29th), Andrew LeBlanc (30th), Daniel Kristo (31st) and again LeBlanc (34th) shot the Augsburg 5-2 lead, all four goals prepared by Kharboutli. When the Munich team shortened to 3: 5 in the person of Parkes (39th), it took only 46 seconds for the Augsburgers to nip the little Munich euphoria in the bud with the goal of TJ Trevelyan (40th). To make matters worse, EHC attacker Mark Voakes was injured after a duel (32nd). For Fießinger it was over after 40 minutes and six goals conceded, for him Daniel Allavena guarded the EHC goal in the last third. The people in front put a lot of pressure and thanks to Redmond’s overpaid goal (43rd) and Daryl Boyle’s goal (60th) they still ran to 5-6. These goals were not enough to prevent Munich from losing their third game in the last four games.
