Erick Leal flirts with Triple Crown pitching

In all sports there are always milestones that enhance an athlete’s career. In baseball, for example, there is the Triple Crown, a feat that very little is seen and pitcher Erick Leal is one step away from achieving it in the Creole ball with Magallanes.

Leal got his fifth win of the season last Wednesday. All thanks to a magnificent work against the Águilas del Zulia. The right-hander pitched seven innings of just two earned runs and three prescribed hitters.

With this great start, the Carabobo-born was the leader in strikeouts with 24. In addition, he consolidated his dominance in victories with five and in ERA with 1.31.

These numbers have served so that the opener of the ship is flirting with the Triple Crown of the pitching in the absence of a few days to finalize the harvest.

Now, with respect to this feat in the entire history of Venezuelan baseball only nine shotguns capable of achieving this milestone. But that’s not all, only two Venezuelan pitchers appear on this list.

The outsiders who achieved this feat were: Roy Welmaker, (1946) and Don Newcombe (1947-1948) with the Sabios de Vargas. The Cuban Santiago Ulrich Para (1949-1950) with Patriotas de Venezuela and Clem Labine (1950-1951) with Navegantes del Magallanes.
They were followed by: Jim Owens (1963-1964) with Industriales de Valencia, Darol Knowles (1964-1965) with Sharks and Bart Johnson (1970-1971) with Las Águilas.

Leal, for his part, will also have the opportunity to be the third Creole pitcher with a Triple Crown. That is, he would match Wilson Álvarez, who did it with the Eagles in (1991-1992) and Edwin Hurtado (2003-2004) with the Cardinals. In addition, the Creole would be breaking a streak of 17 years without seeing a pitcher achieving the Triple Crown.
