ATP modifies the 2021 tennis calendar with the covid still in play

The ATP men’s tennis tour announced Wednesday adjustments to its 2021 schedule, eliminating an event from the United States and adding tournaments in Singapore and Marbella.

The ATP reported on its website that it made the changes and took other measures in order to generate greater gaming opportunities “in the face of the programming challenges presented by the covid-19 pandemic.”

One-year licenses have been granted for two new ATP 250 events for 2021, in Singapore and Marbella, Spain.

The Singapore event will take place at the OCBC Arena from February 22-28, following the conclusion of the upcoming Australian Open. The Marbella tournament will follow the Miami Open in April.

Other measures to increase playing opportunities include an expanded draw at various tournaments, including in Dubai in March and at the Córdoba Open in February and the Argentina Open in March.

The Hungarian Open, a clay tournament usually held in Budapest in April, will move to Belgrade in 2021.

Meanwhile, the clay court tournament in Houston, Texas, usually scheduled for April, will not take place in 2021.

“All other tournaments on the original 2021 schedule remain unchanged at this time and are planned to run as scheduled,” the ATP noted.
