Less than two months later, the team of coach Gerwin Reinink secured itself also the trophy of the German Swimming Association – this record could not be topped in terms of sport. In this euphoria and also in anticipation of the upcoming games in the European Cup, it was possible to choose the athlete In 1993 there was only one winner: the Gronau swimming club.

With a correspondingly clear lead, the choice in the category of teams was decided. That wasn’t a surprise.

Strong competition

The local competition also had some successes. Forward Gronau’s young footballers with coach Egon Reer had won the district cup, the TVG volleyball players celebrated the championship in the district class, and the women’s marathon team of TV Gronau won the runner-up Westphalia championship.

Not to forget the WSCD Gronau surfers, who always played a good role in the athletes’ elections in the first ten years. In 1993 the mixed Bundesliga team won the German championship title in Rostock.

But the water polo players made the race. Trainer Gerwin Reinink was pleased: “It is nice that the WN readers appreciate our work in this way. That shows that there is acceptance. ”He especially thanked the fans who had supported the team in the European Cup preliminary round in Hungary shortly before the“ Ball des Sports ”. “It was admirable what the fans undertook to follow us to Budapest.” Because the trip to the Danube was a success, the SVG players already had the EC finals in Palermo in mind when they were honored in the Concordia .

However, that is a nice confirmation and incentive at the same time. Steinacker was already playing for the SVG when the water polo in Gronau wasn’t making the headlines.

The level of sport in Gronau in 1993 was also evident among the individual athletes. The first three were only 85 votes apart in the evaluation.

But not only “Brazil Tropical” was enthusiastic. A few hours earlier, the magician Heinz Siemering had received the well-deserved applause. The Gronau water polo players had really taken off in 1993 by winning the German Championship and the DSV Cup. But now Siemering let water polo player Tanja Manske float “completely weightless” in the hall of the Concordia.

The audience was just as impressed by this as by the appearance of two rock’n’roll dance couples, which underlined the sporting aspect of this once again sold-out festival event.

Vogel was managing director of TV Westfalia Epe for over 40 years. At the time of the award, Josef Gröning had been on the ball for SG Gronau for over 30 years and in 1989 he had also taken over the chairmanship of the Black and Whites.

The city association for physical exercises and the sponsors were also happy with the course of the election. After a small low in the previous year, voter turnout had increased significantly.
