The Anderlecht vs Club Bruges Rivalry: A History of Struggle and Triumph

Anderlecht’s record in its matches against Club Bruges in recent years is not promising at all for Mauves supporters. Sporting remains in five games without a victory, the last being the 2-1 on April 11, 2021, when Sambi Lokonga deceived Mignolet from afar with a floating ball. Lang and Nmecha were the first scorers. In the current squad of the Mauves only Verschaeren remains, who started that day. Ashimeru, Sardella and Amuzu were on the bench.

This 2-1 (oddly a match without an audience, given that we were in the Covid period) is the only victory for Anderlecht in the last ten home matches against the Club, adding the 0-2 in the December 2019 Cup But all these meetings took place during the difficult period of Sporting, after the takeover by Marc Coucke. Brugge won four of these ten games, the other five ended in a draw. Anderlecht, however, has often delivered good performances, without receiving what it deserved.

There was also a time when a visit to Anderlecht was a nightmare for the people of Bruges. Between 1998 and 2019, the Club did not win a single one of its 29 championship matches at Parc Astrid, not counting a 0-2 in the Supercup in 2004. Michel Preud’homme did not win a single one of his eight matches in Anderlecht with Club Bruges. But in the meantime, Sporting is no longer a black beast for the Blauw en Zwart.
