The competition committee, in charge of the rules in the NBA, has met and The Athletic reports that it has unanimously voted to increase the number of players on the scoresheet, from 13 to 15.
Why this evolution? Because with Covid-19, it is possible that players will test positive a few hours, or even a few minutes from the start of a meeting, and allowing more players will compensate for any unexpected forfeits. Owners must now approve this change on December 17th.
The competition committee also decided to validate the “challenge” test for coaches.
The coaches will therefore always be able to challenge an arbitration decision at each meeting. However, the system leaves many people perplexed, but the competition committee has so far preferred not to change it, a proposed solution being for example to offer a second “challenge” if the first is successful.
NBA officially adopting coach’s challenge as part of competition, but rules remain status quo. Two common suggestions were: Award second challenge if first was successful; or team retains timeout following successful challenge.
