Third Copa del Rey in a row for Bidasoa

With Bidasoa Irun’s march –twelve victories and two defeats in the Sacyr Asobal League– their presence in the eighth-eight final of the Copa del Rey was taken for granted. Now, after their 32-27 victory against Incarlopsa Cuenca, It can already be said that the Irundarras are mathematically classified for that final phase.

This season, due to the coronavirus, the format has been changed and only eight of the final phase will participate in this tournament. To distribute the tickets, the classification at the end of the first round will be taken into account, entering the first seven, plus the host or, in case it is played on neutral ground, the current runner-up, Benidorm.

It will be the third consecutive participation of the bidasotarras in the final eight and fourth in the five seasons they have been in the Sacyr Asobal League since their second return to the top flight. Now the challenge will be not to fall in the quarterfinals, as happened on the last three occasions, in León against Granollers (29-31), in Alicante against Cuenca (33-36) and in Madrid against Benidorm (26-29). The last two years, the losses were against teams that reached the final.

Going for the Asobal Cup

Before that, those from Cuétara must confirm their presence in the Asobal Cup, which would also be the third in a row. It was planned to put the finishing touch to the first round with the first three of it and the host Cantabria Sinfín but it was postponed.

The Bidasoa Irun is virtually classified. He should lose the three games he has left (in Granollers and at home to Puerto Sagunto and Barça) and that certain results be given between his pursuers, who have clashes between them.
