Schwartzman and an incredible end of the year: played the ATP Nitto Finals and established himself in the top 10

Diego Schwartzman had a spectacular end of the year and was one of the great surprises of the circuit in this 2020. The Argentine managed to get into the top 10 and played for the first time the ATP Nitto Finals, the tournament that each year-end brings together the 8 best-ranked players according to the ranking of the ATP. We review his performance in the different tournaments since the return of tennis after the 5-month stoppage due to the pandemic.

A big comeback

Since the resumption of tennis, Diego Schwartzman’s level has gone from low to high. The Argentine fell in the second and first rounds of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 and the US Open respectively. In Kitzbuhel, he also reached the second game, but from there he raised his level. At the Masters 1000 in Rome he reached the final, having eliminated Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals of a tournament played on clay, where he lost to Novak Djokovic.

At Roland Garros he reached the semifinals, but Rafa he had his revenge and eliminated him, despite the fact that the porteño presented opposition. In the second ATP 250 in Cologne, the one from Buenos Aires reached the final but was clearly defeated by the German Alexander Zverev. Finally, at the Masters 1000 in Paris he got off to a very good start in his first two games but fell sharply to Russian Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.

It was not enough for the ATP Finals

The Small capped the year with a participation in the ATP Nitto Finals, although he could not win any of the 3 matches of the round robin. In the first game, against Novak Djokovic, the porteño started well in the first set, but the Serbian was intractable and took 6-3 the first race, and then 6-2 the second after the loss of the level of Schwartzman. Then he played a very even game with Alexander Zverev and against Daniil Medvedev it was the game where he was outscored by more difference.

It was the best breaker of the year

As reported by the ATP, the porteño won 175 games with the serve of his rival, which represents 34.86% and places him in the first place in terms of this statistic if we take into account this year. His guard is Rafael Nadal who won 137 games, which represents 34.42% of those he played, while Novak Djokovic is fourth with 183 breaks, which leaves a 32.85% effectiveness with the rival’s service.
