Savickis: We deserve our Ministry of Sports

Latvian sports would need big, not many and small reforms, for example, the establishment of the Ministry of Sports, which would also oversee the entire life of Latvian sports, commenting on the Ministry of Education and Science’s intention to start consultations in January on governance of sports companies and possible mergers. Juris Savickis, President of the Latvian Tennis Union (LTS), told LETA.

It has already been reported that Danielis Nātriņš, who is also a temporary member of the board at the Riga “Daugava Stadium” and the Lielupe Tennis Center, will become the acting chairman of the board of Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track on December 11.

In January, the Ministry of Education and Science plans to start consultations with representatives of the sports industry on the management of sports capital companies and a possible merger of these companies.

The Ministry has four national sports bases – SIA “Sporta centrs” Mežaparks “”, SIA “Tenisa centrs” Lielupe “”, SIA “Bobsleja un kamaniņu trase” Sigulda “” and VSIA “Kultūras un sporta centrs” Daugavas stadions “”.

Earlier, the Secretary General of the Latvian Athletics Union (LVS) Dmitrijs Milkevics said, as well as the President of the Latvian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (LBSF) Jānis Kols and the head of the Latvian Luge Federation (LKSF) Atis Strenga pointed out that essential. Savickis also said that this is one of the preconditions for the Tennis Center “Lielupe” to work without interruption.

“This topic is not new. It has been talked about for several years now – how to optimize work and monitor these sports facilities that the country needs,” Savickis reveals. “It is important to have a person to be held accountable. This applies not only to the tennis center in Lielupe, but also to other sports facilities. If the responsibility spills out, there will be nothing good. So far, the tennis center has been run by a director, and I would like it to remains below. “

“The manager of the tennis center cannot come to work for two or three hours and then move on with other worries. There is a huge farm in the center of Lielupe that needs regular monitoring, otherwise we will ‘come in oats’. structure is already another matter. “

Savickis pointed out that he is open to reforms, because something should be tried. However, he emphasized that it would not be possible for one person to manage so many sports facilities at the same time, because each of them must bear financial and also political responsibility.

In this case, it would be much more useful to create an entire ministry – the Ministry of Sports with its head, because for the current Ms. Šuplinskas, led by the Ministry of Education and Science, “the hands are sometimes just too short”. Although this opinion is very unpopular, Savickis pointed out that in a Latvia saturated with sports, this would probably be the right step.

“Any reform must be tested in life, because it is not that we start implementing something new and later can not go back to the old. In fact, I believe that Latvia should have a sports minister. I understand that today is not a popular slogan, but if we want to optimize monitoring, it should we have to think in this direction, “Savickis emphasizes. “I understand that it is another ministry right away, but it would not require large financial resources.”

“We do not lack people who would be worthy to hold the position of a minister, because you can see for yourself how many sports personalities there are in Latvia. The Minister of Education has many contradictory functions, so the Ministry of Sports should be established, which could develop sports subordination to national bases.”

Such a move would avoid the need for boards, executive directors and other positions in individual organizations, which often only complicate rather than facilitate important decisions.

It has already been reported that a week ago, at the extraordinary meeting of SIA “Bobsleja un kamaniņu trase” Sigulda “”, taking into account the dismissal of the current board member Daina Dukurs, it was decided to dismiss her position on December 11. Dukura’s last term of office will be December 10, but Nātriņš has been appointed the Chairman of the Board of the track as of December 11, who will perform his duties until the holder of state capital shares elects a new candidate in accordance with the Public Person Capital Capital and Capital Companies Management Law.

Nātriņš is currently also a temporary board member of the state SIA “Kultūras un sporta centrs” Daugavas stadions “” and SIA “Tenisa centrs” Lielupe “”.
