Rally pilot Sesks in the legendary Monza competes for the laurels of the world junior champion / Article / LSM.lv

The World Rally Championship or WRC is one of the most watched motorsport championships in the world, where in 2020 Latvian driver Mārtiņš Sesks will also start, fighting for the title of world champion in the WRC junior class. The final stage of the World Championship will take place this time on the legendary Monza track in Italy, but riders over the weekend will have to think not only about the speed in the distance, but also the weather and the choice of tires.

The jerky World Rally Championship or WRC season in the first week of December will finally conclude with the final stage in Italy. A very serious task in the competition is for the Latvian driver Seskam, who has ridden convincingly during the season, being on the podium in all three stages and winning in Estonia. For Liepāja, the goal of the season was to compete for the top three in the overall standings, but due to the scoring system, his main competitor Swede Tom Christenson has a small advantage in the fight for the title, because each pilot does not include the worst stage results in the final standings.

“The goal of the season is in the TOP 3 world championship overall rating, so we are already in a very good place and we are the championship leader,” said Sesks. “Although if we look at these [punktu] calculations, we are not leaders at all, we are five points behind Tom Christenson. Because these calculations, taking the worst stage out, play a little in Tom’s favor. “

The fight for the WRC Junior Champion will inevitably create additional tensions, but

this is not the first time Seska ‘s career has claimed a high – level competition title.

The rider triumphed in the junior championship of the European Championship two years ago, and Sesks pointed out that over the years he has learned to do everything possible not to overload the mind with thoughts about the overall rating.

Sesks has no doubt that he should drive in Monza as fast as possible and show the best performance, but without thinking about the overall rating. “I’ve already made mistakes in my career thinking a lot about it and making even more trouble,” the pilot explained.

In the decisive stage in Italy, the race takes place mostly on the legendary Monza track and its access roads.

Built 98 years ago, Monza hosts Formula One (F-1) races every year and is one of the fastest racing tracks in the world.

Latvian crew coach Uldis Briedis said that the preparations for the race were started very early in order to recall the specifics of driving on asphalt. The crew went through a thorough training program to prepare for the specifics of the Monza track. In Latvia, trainings on asphalt took place on the Biķernieki track, only a little lack of opportunities to prepare for public roads, Briedis explained.

In northern Italy, the weather has come as a surprise to the competitors –

already at the time of recording the track a few days ago the participants had to face the snow and snowfall is forecast for the whole weekend.

At the last minute, the rally organizers even adopted changes to the regulations, allowing the use of winter tires at the discretion of the riders. Seska’s coach Briedis pointed out that the work of meteorologists and the ability to choose the right tires at the right time will play a huge role in the rally.

There are even small teams with three meteorologists in the rally, which will follow the conditions in the rally before the special stages, explained Briedis. Seska’s crew will not be left without meteorological information, and Briedis hopes that it will not make mistakes in choosing tires.

The fight for the junior WRC title is not the only intrigue this weekend, because the WRC champion has yet to be determined. Elfins Evans is heading towards his first title, while last year’s champion Ots Tanaks will try to win the 3rd place in the overall standings in the last stage. The rally is scheduled for five stages on Friday, but the decisive events are expected on Saturday and Sunday.
