No athlete of the year – Schwetzinger Zeitung / Hockenheimer Zeitung

Speyer. The award of the honorary award for the athletes of the year 2020 as well as the awarding of the team award and the young talent award of the city of Speyer have been canceled due to the pandemic. Also and especially in the field of sport one sees oneself confronted with extraordinary circumstances everywhere. This also leads to the cancellation of the honorary award, which was scheduled for the beginning of March 2021, announced the city administration.

“We have dealt intensively with the election for the athletes of the year for 2020 and wanted to give the athletes additional motivation, especially in this difficult year,” explains Mayor and Sports Department Head Monika Kabs. “However, there are currently no comparable conditions, as the Corona-related training and competition operations affect the respective sports differently.” Overall, many athletes could not have taken the opportunity to present themselves publicly with competitive performances, adds Kabs.

First suspension since start in 1972

Since this unevenness would not have done justice to the honorary award, the decision was made to suspend the renowned Speyer award and thus also the awarding of the team and young talent award for a year.

This has been a novelty since the first honorary award ceremony for the athlete of the year 1972, because so far the award has been given without interruption, the city reports. The first prize winner was the boxer Hans Freistadt (1st Boxing Club Speyer). Two years later, Henny Sohn, a female athlete, was honored for the first time by the judo sports club. In addition to many other well-deserved athletes, Alicia Bohn (rowing society) and Peter Rudolph (water sports club Speyer) recently received this honor. zg
