During this off-season, Lundqvist and his New York Rangers team, previously represented for 15 seasons, agreed to buy out the last year of the contract. A week later, the Swede joined the “Capitals”, but on Thursday in a conversation with the media revealed that next season will not play.
“I will not join the Capitals team in the coming season. I have been consulting with doctors for several weeks who have diagnosed me with heart problems, so I will not go to the field,” Lundqvist explained.
The goalkeeper indicated that he wanted to reduce all possible risks, so he will carefully consider his next steps in the coming months.
“This has not been an easy process. When I received the results of the last test, I realized that there was only one action plan,” the goalkeeper added.
In the upcoming season, it was planned that Lundqvist would share the playing time with 23-year-old Ilya Samsonov.
Last season, Lundqvist shared the game with 24-year-old Russian goalkeepers Alexander Georgiy and Igor Shestyorkin. Lundqvist played 30 games in the goal, Georgijevs 34, but Šestjorkins won ten games in 12 matches.
