Latvia acquires the right to host the decisive races of the European Championship qualification in basketball / Article / LSM.lv

The Board of the European Division of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA Europe) granted the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS) the right to hold the final games of the 2021 European Women’s Championship and 2022 European Men’s Championship qualifiers in February with the participation of home national teams, LBS informed on Friday.

In the last selection cycle, both Latvian national teams were scheduled to play at home, and in November, by successfully organizing a women’s team run for eight teams, Latvia has already proven that it is able to organize competitions qualitatively and safely in a pandemic situation, explained LBS Secretary General Kaspars Cyprus. He added that in these circumstances, the decision of the FIBA European Board was logical and predictable.

“Together with our partners, we are ready to organize competitions in accordance with the epidemiological safety requirements and FIBA standards set in our country,” LBS quoted Cyprus as saying. “For now, the second responsibility will be no less important – to do our best to provide our teams with the best conditions and the best possible line-up, to take advantage of their field and win tickets to the European Championship finals.”

Group H matches are scheduled for men’s national units on February 20 and 22, when Latvia will have to meet with Bulgaria and Greece, respectively. A victory with a six-point advantage over Bulgaria will guarantee Latvians participation in the final tournament, where Greece and Bosnia / Herzegovina have already entered Group H. A victory over the Bulgarians with a smaller advantage can also secure a place in the final tournament if other games in the group end favorably. In order to enter the final tournament, the four-team qualification group must not be left in the last place.

For women’s national units, games in Latvia in Group I are scheduled for February 3 and 5. Latvia will first meet with Northern Macedonia, but will play the second game against Germany. In Riga, a ticket to the final tournament with a victory in the first game over Germany can be provided by Croatians. If such a scenario comes true, the winners of the Latvian and German games will take second place in the group. Latvians have not lost their chances for the first place in the group, but this requires not only victories in the remaining games, but also favorable other results.

The winners of nine groups and the top five runners-up will qualify for the women’s finals in June 2021 in Spain and France. Thus, the second place in the group will not be a guarantee for participation in the final tournament.
