Ineta Radeviča’s disqualification has ended: the state has still not received a penny from her

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AUI) found repeated traces of the anabolic steroid oxandrolone in Radeviča’s analyzes after repeated tests of doping tests at the London Olympics, as a result of which the former athlete resigned from the position of President of the Latvian Athletics Union (LVS) on November 27, 2018.

In August last year, she received a two-year disqualification, which took effect on August 8, 2012, thus invalidating the athlete’s results at the 2012 London Olympics, where she won fourth place.

Radevica was also sentenced to a two-year ban, which came into force on November 22, 2018 and ended at the beginning of last week.

As the LETA agency clarified for LVS, Radeviča can run for elected positions in the athletics union after the disqualification. Next year, the LVS Election Congress will take place, where the head of the organization and the board will be approved for the next four years.

Radeviča currently lives in the USA and has not shown a desire to return to LVS.

In April, Edgars Severs, Director of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Science (MES), revealed that Radeviča had not responded to the MES’s call to return the government’s Olympic prize of 30,000 euros. The situation has not changed in the last eight months either, but the legal framework for awarding athletes currently does not allow or significantly hinders the possibility to file a lawsuit.

Severs also stated in communication with the agency LETA that LVS is an association, and it is a question of the members of the organization about the choice of the head of the organization. At the same time, he noted that it is relatively difficult from an ethical and good governance point of view to imagine a person disqualified for anti-doping rule violations, even if the disqualification has expired, to lead a sports federation.

After the London Olympics, Radevič competed at the highest level in the Diamond League, but the following winter she announced the end of her career. In London in 2012, she finished fourth with a result of 6.88 meters, only a centimeter behind the bronze award.

Radevičs owns the Latvian record in long jump – in 2010 in Barcelona she jumped 6.92 meters and won a gold medal in the European Championship.

“It is the athlete’s duty to follow a fair game, which Radeviča unfortunately did not do!” MES is ready to go to court

At the beginning of 2017, Radeviča became the vice-champion of the world in 2011 after disqualifying a competitor for the use of illicit substances, although initially she had won bronze. Her medal won at that time became Latvia’s first prize in the history of an independent state in world championships.

In March 2017, Radeviča was elected president of LVS, but a few days after AIU announced her resignation. Radeviča emphasized that he had not deliberately used illicit drugs, but at the same time expressed the understanding that this did not absolve him of responsibility.
