After the suspension yesterday of the opening day of the second round of the IV Puerto Portals Dragon Winter Series, the Regatta Committee was able to complete two rounds today which, added to the four disputed last November, introduced the first discard in the classification general.

The Swedish boat Galant, owned by Jan Strombeck, secured the lead after obtaining a partial 4 + 2 and placing itself with nine points, which gives it an income of five points over the German Meerblick (2 + 4), from Otto Pohlmann, Second classified. Jorge Forteza, at the helm of Mister Nova, climbs to the provisional podium thanks to the victory obtained in the last test of the day.

The weather forecast was fulfilled today in the Bay of Palma. The wind blew light from the south component, with gusts not exceeding ten knots, but in return it remained stable throughout the competition. The first start took place at 1:50 p.m. over a 0.8-mile stretch with the windward mark located SSW. After 50 minutes, the first classified crossed the finish line. The Gunter, owned by Javier Scherk and whose crew includes the Olympic champion Iker Martínez, was the winner of the round and is fourth overall.

The second round began at 15.05, taking advantage of the fact that the wind, set on a 195 degree axis, was still blowing weak but very stable. The beacon was again at 0.8 miles. Mister Nova was the fastest Dragon in the fleet in this test.

The IV Puerto Portals Dragon Winter Series brings together ten boats in the Bay of Palma this weekend, eight of them local and two coming from abroad. The regatta can be disputed as compliance with the sanitary restrictions decreed by the Government of the Balearic Islands to control the spread of Covid-19 is guaranteed. Each of the boats is manned by three people, so that the maximum number of 50 participants established by the regulations is easily respected.

The competition will continue tomorrow. The Race Committee hopes to be able to do two or three races. Conditions will be somewhat different than today. The wind, as announced by the parties, will roll NW and its intensity will oscillate between 6 and 12 knots.

The Puerto Portals Regatta Club has decided to maintain its commitment to the Dragon class despite the situation derived from the Covid-19 pandemic. The objective is to continue organizing sporting events, with the proper protocols, and to preserve Mallorca’s position as the European capital of the Dragon class. The third round of the IV Puerto Portals Dragon Winter Series is scheduled for January 15, 16 and 17.
