Hello and welcome to LIVE LIVE of Cross Ancona Le Velò, fourth stage of the Adriatic Cyclocross Tour. This is a particularly awaited race by all cycling enthusiasts because it marks the great return in the race by Fabio Aru. The Sardinian has not ridden in a group since last September 6, when he retired from the Tour de France. After almost four months at the center of attention for the cyclomarket and the signing with Qhubeka Asson, but today the Knight of the Four Moors will compete with the UAE Emirates jersey (the contract will expire on December 31st).
Fabio Aru has chosen cyclocross to get back into the game, his first love, the one that brought him closer to the pedal universe. The 30-year-old wants to warm up his leg in the mud of the challenging track built on the lawns outside the Conero Stadium in the Marche capital. The goal is obviously to test its shape and to launch towards 2021, the year of its hoped-for rebirth after three extremely complicated seasons from the physical point of view and with no noteworthy results. This will be the first of three cyclocross events, the next will be on 29 December in the province of Treviso and perhaps we will see it again on 3 January (an event yet to be confirmed).
Fabio Aru last raced in cyclocross in January 2008: World Cup junior test, he finished 25th in the race in which star Peter Sagan was second. Today’s is an FCI Marche regional championship test, with the assignment of top class points (in view of the Italian Championships in Lecce, 8-10 January 2021). We will compete on a 2800-meter track that knows how to best combine technique and spectacle between dirt roads, slight counter-slopes, very little asphalt and with the addition of stairs, characterized by mud due to the rain that fell yesterday.
The Sardinian’s most formidable opponent, which has no particular ambitions in terms of results, is Gioele Bertolini, Italian cyclocross champion in 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2018-2019. Attention to Antonio Folcarelli (second in the second stage of the Adriatic Tour). We will see at work too Philippe Mancinelli and Gabriele Torcianti (second and third on Christmas Eve in Sant’Egidio alla Vibrata). Samuele Leone, Stefano Capponi, Stefano Sala, Luca Urbino, Luca Cibrario, Lorenzo Cionna, Luca De Nicola, Pietro Pavoni are the other men able to have their say in this event.
