One of the darkest days in the history of top-class sport in Pressbaum will be on September 28th. At that time, Antonia Meinke and Chee Tean Tan died in a tragic car accident on the way back from the Czech Open. The Malay top athlete had found his new home in Pressbaum a few months before with the love of his life. He wanted to study in Austria and together with Antonia Meinke supervised the badminton youth training. The couple had played in mixed doubles at the Czech tournament at an international level before their lives ended much too early due to the accident on the return trip south of Brno.

This year the parents of the deceased from Malaysia visited Europe for the first time in the unlucky month of September a year later. Together with the parents of Antonia Meinke and her sister Carina, they remembered the great sporting successes and plans of Antonia and Chee Tean. Mayor Josef Schmidl-Haberleitner invited both families to the town hall in order to confirm that Pressbaum is keeping the memory.

Together with Vice Mayor Alfred Gruber and sports advisor Markus Naber, the outstanding achievements for badminton were thought of. As a farewell, the mayor gave Chee Tean’s parents and relatives a picture showing the pair of badminton players at the last tournament.

In the meantime, Chee Tean Tan’s parents have started the 10,500 kilometer journey home again.
