Spanish League News: After waiting for a long time, Iker Casillas finally returned to Real Madrid’s arms. The former Spanish National Team goalkeeper will work at the Real Madrid Foundation in his new position as Assistant General Director.
“Real Madrid CF announces that Iker Casillas has joined the Real Madrid Foundation as Assistant General Director. Casillas is a Real Madrid legend, he represents the values of our club and is the best goalkeeper in our history, “wrote a Real Madrid statement on their official page.
“Real Madrid is proud to welcome one of the best captains back home,” concluded the statement.
The Real Madrid Foundation was founded in 1997 with a focus on applying sport to improve the lives of young people in Madrid and beyond. Casillas will now work alongside Real Madrid CEO, Enrique Sanchez, as part of their ambitious project to grow the foundations in the next few decades.
During 16 years of strengthening Real Madrid’s first team, from 1999 to 2015, Casillas is one of the symbols of Los Blancos. Casillas is considered to be one of the successful examples of Real Madrid’s football academy, La Fabrica. The goalkeeper, nicknamed San Iker by the Los Blancos supporters, has made 725 appearances for Los Blancos in all competitions.
This record led the former Spanish national team goalkeeper to second in the list of players with the highest number of appearances for Los Blancos, behind Raul Gonzales, who packed 741 appearances in all competitions.
Not only about his irreplaceable position between Madrid’s goal, Casillas also made gold ink with Los Blancos. The goalkeeper who decided to retire in the middle of this year has presented five La Liga titles, three Champions League trophies and a pair of Copa del Rey trophies for Los Blancos. Overall, Casillas, who is now 39 years old, has won 19 trophies to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium while defending Los Blancos.
