The austrian Dominic Thiem, 27 years old and world No. 3, is the first signing of Roger Federer for their Laver Cup, the annual team competition between Europe and the World.
After not being disputed this season due to the coronavirus, the dates for the 2021 edition are from September 24 to 26, with the TD Garden de Boston, in United States.
Thiem, champion of the US Open and finalist of the Australian Open and ATP Finals, he joins Roger Federer as second tennis player under the command of the captain of the European formation, the Swede Bjorn Borg.
The American John McEnroe will continue to direct the World Team of this competition like the Ryder Cup golf course organized by Federer’s company.
“I have been fortunate to be on the winning side in two of the three Laver Cup so far, in Prague and Geneva, and it is a truly unique event, like no other on the circuit. I am looking forward to helping Team Europe capture a fourth title, ”Thiem says in the official tournament note.
The event took place at the O2 Arena in Prague (2017), the United Center in Chicago (2018) and the Palexpo in Geneva (2019). The TD Garden maintains the aborted plan in 2019.
