Schalke separates from Reschke and suspends two players

Dhe bottom of the table, FC Schalke 04, has drawn personal consequences in its ongoing crisis. The Bundesliga club reacted to the winless series of 24 games in a row and some turbulence last Tuesday with the separation of squad planner Michael Reschke and the recently signed striker Vedad Ibisevic.

Nabil Bentaleb on his 26th birthday and Amine Harit were once again suspended and should now train individually. “He is undoubtedly an excellent footballer, there are no two opinions. However, we have to realize that Schalke and Nabil Bentaleb obviously don’t go together, ”said sports director Jochen Schneider in the evening after a turbulent day. On Wednesday, Schneider wants to explain the situation at Schalke.

Bentaleb came to Schalke from Tottenham Hotspur for 20 million euros in 2016 and has since been – like Harit – suspended several times. Now it should be over. “There wasn’t that one moment, it was a process. They will part ways by summer 2021 at the latest, ”said Schneider. For Harit, on the other hand, the path to becoming professionals should remain open. “A few things happened last weekend that we didn’t like,” explained Schneider. “We will not drop Amine, we will do everything together to bring him back to the point where he can bring his qualities to our club.”

In Ibisevic, however, there is apparently another player with whom it did not fit Schalke. At the weekend there was a dispute between the 36-year-old and assistant trainer Naldo during training. But this is not the reason for the separation. “Both Vedad and we had different expectations of his commitment at Schalke 04. From our point of view, it is now better to end the cooperation and to part on good terms,” said Schneider. Ibisevic had only come from Hertha BSC in September, but remained goalless in four games. The contract is to be terminated on December 31st.

Squad planner Reschke also has to go. “We would like to thank Michael Reschke for his work in anything but easy times. Ultimately we had a different opinion about the sporting future of the club, ”said Schneider. Reschke, who had been employed as Technical Director since May 2019, expressed his thanks for the cooperation in the club announcement. “I am convinced that the team has the quality to keep the class and will continue to cheer for every game,” he is quoted as saying.

On Saturday (6.30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga and on Sky) the Royal Blues will play with the Champions League participant Borussia Mönchengladbach. Against Borussia, Schalke won the last Bundesliga game so far on January 17th. After that it went steeply downhill. Even a change of coach – Manuel Baum for David Wagner – could not stop the downfall of the traditional club so far.
