Paco Gutirrez, pioneer of Catalan motoring and former director of Girona, dies

The businessman Paco Gutiérrez, owner of the management of Carrer Nou in Girona that bore his name, and one of the pioneers of Catalan and Girona motoring, has died at the age of 79 from a long illness.

He was a great multidisciplinary athlete. His beginnings in the sport began with roller hockey, where he developed the task of referee. He later became Spanish Shooting Champion. But it was his great fondness for motorsport that made him best known. Racing was his hobby, he was active from 1969 to 1981, both in rallies and in the mountains, and later he was the president of the Escuderia Girona. From this time he began his role as organizer.

Thus, during the 1980s, he established the European Autocross Championship in Spain, first at the Planes circuit, and later at the Sils circuit, an installation that he himself created and that was strategically built with two variants: Autocross and Rallycross.

With the entry of his son Francesc in the car competition he moved away from Motorsport to become closer to football, becoming vice president of Girona FC between the 80s and early 90s. In 2015, a tribute was paid to Paco Gutiérrez and the Escuderia Girona during the BarcelonaRX, as the promoter of the first rallycross in Spain.
