Notre Dame v Clemson, Sturmfeld fans, COVID-19, social distancing, reaction

The Notre Dame v Clemson college football game was one of the most anticipated games of the season, but troubling questions hit social media after fans stormed the field after an epic game.

Clemson is one of college football’s powerhouses, having played the last two national championship games on quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

But after Lawrence dropped out of the last two games under contract with COVID-19 as well as three defensive line starters, Notre Dame stayed the door open to upset. And they did – just barely.

In front of 10,000 viewers due to COVID restrictions, Notre Dame won a 2OT 47-40 thriller to end a 28-game winning streak for Clemson in the ACC division.

It is the first time in 27 years that Notre Dame has been the top ranked team in the nation.

The excitement poured onto the field and the 10,000 spectators stormed the field after the win.

Despite a massive spike in daily cases of COVID in the U.S., coaches on their respective teams had no problem with the lack of social distancing.

“When they stormed the field, you got a sense of a special moment at Notre Dame,” said Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly. “I told our team on our walk today, ‘Look, if we win this thing, the fans will storm the field. Since COVID is what it is, we have to leave the field and get to the tunnel. ‘Now I’ve knocked them all down the tunnel so it wouldn’t go so well. “

Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book said “When the fans stormed the field it was fun” while Kyren Williams enjoyed the festivities.

“It’s the first time a college has stormed the field. That was a cool experience, ”said Williams. “(Kelly) told us to go in as soon as possible after the game.”

Even Clemson trainer Dabo Swinney had no problem with the celebrations.

He was seen on television cameras trying to move through a crowd of trailers from the field.

“It was an epic game, emotional game,” said Swinney. “They loved their team.”

While there were plenty of masks in the crowd, social media quickly took the leap as daily cases of COVID-19 increased across the country except Indiana.

The numbers in Indiana rose last month, having increased from 1,600 new daily cases on August 24 to 247 on November 7.
