Maradona: Diego is dead, but his works of art remain – sport

Of course, Diego Maradona was a genius on the soccer field, that’s the basis of his crazy story. If you don’t remember exactly, you should immediately look at his two masterpieces in memory of him in the 2-1 victory in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup against England, luckily everything is immortalized on the Internet. In his second goal, the Argentine tricked half the opposing team, a century solo and at that time understood as a fine revenge for the battle for the Falklands aka Malvinas. And he didn’t score the first goal, he punched it. It was “the hand of God”, explained the rogue, giving his vertigo an unbeatable absolution.

From then on Maradona moved between heaven and hell, in the midst of earthly phenomena such as “Emperor” Franz Beckenbauer or “King” Pelé and yet above them. His canonization continued when he conquered Italy with the SSC Naples, past the safes in Milan, Turin and Rome. There have always been great football players, stylish men like the Portuguese Ronaldo who never seem to sweat. Multimillionaires who also have a career as entrepreneurs. His compatriot Lionel Messi became the new messiah on the field, but no one is like Diego Armando Maradona, whose disciples put their magic gates on video with tango and even invented a Maradona church.

Is it blasphemy to talk about him like that? Is it allowed to exaggerate a person that much? Better not, but it’s almost inevitable when someone has made such a mark on a game that billions of people love. The Maradona case shows the fascinating, sometimes eerie and destructive power of football.

There was a time when Maradona was probably the most famous person in the world. How can a simple person cope with that? In addition, the deification struck a man from Argentina, known as the realm of wasted opportunity, who yearns for idols in all its crises and worships tragic legends such as Che Guevara and Evita Perón. And above all: The divinely brilliant footballer Maradona was so utterly human. It ended up as a wreck.

The fame destroys the heroes in rows, see also other fallen idols like Helmut Rahn, George Best or the Brazilian Garrincha, although they were hardly half as famous as Maradona. Nowadays the stars are surrounded by consultants and brought up to be media-savvy. Maradona, on the other hand, came from a slum and was worshiped like the Savior, he had the wrong friends, the wrong manager, the wrong way of life. Beyond the lines of the soccer field, Maradona sniffed white powder, drank, drank, and ruined herself in a way that, as a country, not even auto-destructive Argentina can manage. But that also contributed to its myth. Maradona, the former golden boy with the number 10 on his jersey, hooked death so many hooks that at some point he was believed to be immortal.

Only one day even immortals will be buried, unfortunately, even Muhammad Ali and Diego Maradona. If you have a sense for mysticism, it should be said that Maradona died on the same day as his friend Fidel Castro, both on November 25th. You will never forget Diego Maradona, no matter how many talents come from football schools. Diego is dead, Maradona’s works of art remain.
