Facundo Pelistri’s progress revealed

Facundo Pelistri is making good progress in the first-team training sessions, Manchester United U23 manager Neil Wood has confirmed.

The 18-year-old is still adapting to English football after joining from Uruguayan club Penarol on the last day of the summer transfer window for an initial fee of £ 9m.

Pellistri has done most of his work at Carrington with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first squad but has yet to make his United debut. He has played twice for United’s youth team, once for the U23 and for the U21 against Morecambe on Wednesday night.

And U23 boss Neil Wood believes that the experience of playing against league opponents who United lost 4-0 will be an invaluable experience for Pellistri.

When asked by MEN Sport about the young winger’s progress, Wood said:

“We didn’t really have much access to him, he trained a lot with the first team and trained well with the first team so it will take some time to adapt.

“It’s not easy to come to another country and get started. You can see that at the highest level. So it’s great for him to come out on the field and have a few minutes behind him and have a little bit of match sharpness. It will help him in the long run.

“I know tonight [at Morecambe] is not the ideal situation for him, but it can only benefit him when he’s on the field. “
