Liverpool’s training ground could help the Reds bridge the gap with Manchester United and other rivals

A total of 11 players who were at Liverpool for at least three seasons between the ages of 15 and 21 played in the five best leagues in Europe in 2019/20, according to new figures from the CIES Football Observatory.

They are more “club trained” players than any other English club except Manchester United (24), Arsenal (23), Chelsea (20), Manchester City (16), Southampton (15) and Tottenham (13).

Manchester United have consistently had more club players in the top five leagues – the best flights in England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain – than any other English club over the past five seasons.

In 2019/20, United topped the list with 24 club-trained players, followed by Arsenal at 23, Chelsea at 20, Manchester City at 16, Southampton at 15, Tottenham at 13 and Liverpool at 11.

United also topped the list in 2018/19 with 28 club-trained players, placing them ahead of Chelsea (23), Arsenal (20), Tottenham (17), Southampton (15) and Manchester City (12). No figures are available for Liverpool this year.

In 2017/18 Manchester United topped the list of English clubs again with 24 club-trained players. Arsenal finished second at 17, Tottenham third at 15, Manchester City at 15 fourth and Liverpool and Chelsea at 12 fifth.

However, if you take into account the playing time and the level of competition, Chelsea prevailed last season.

The players coached by Chelsea played an average of 17.1 games each, compared with 16.0 for Manchester United, 13.7 for Arsenal and 16.9 for Manchester City.

This means that the Football Observatory’s analysis gives Chelsea a weighted score of 43.9, ahead of Manchester United (41.8), Arsenal (36.4), Manchester City (34.1) and Liverpool (29.4 ) lie.

Real Madrid has the best weighted score in Europe with 69.1, followed by Barcelona (62.1), Valencia (48.7), Real Sociedad (47.7), Athletic Bilbao (47.7), Lyon (47, 4), Chelsea (43.9) and Atletico Madrid (42.7)) and Manchester United (41.8).

With Liverpool moving to the new AXA Training Center in Kirkby after the international break, Jürgen Klopp’s first-team squad will finally train in the immediate vicinity of the club’s academy.

This could further strengthen Liverpool’s youth system and allow the Reds boss to keep a closer eye on the stars of the future and get them into training with his squad.
